DIY Green House Build (On-going Blog)

In the great state of South Dakota, the winters are long and the growing season is short!  We want to be able to extend our growing time by building a green house structure.

Green House Build Site

We have a fairly level area on the South side of one of our barns.  This space gets full sun for almost the entire day, making it a great location for a green house.  Our plan is to build it and connect it to the barn so that it can be entered through a doorway on the side of the barn.  Connecting the green house to the barn will give us a couple advantages;

We will have direct access to an already existing electrical box, enabling us to add lighting and heating to the greenhouse.

We will have one less wall to build for the green house, as we can attach the structure to the already existing barn on one wall.

Materials and Planning

Right now we have free wood pallets and about 25 old windows that will be the bulk of our construction materials.  We intend to purchase the proper roofing because here in South Dakota, the wind is no joke.  We will have to build this green house extra sturdy to ensure it can handle the elements here.

We will be drawing up some plans soon, as well as clearing the brush from this area to determine how level the ground is.  (This is right where our nettle patch comes up, so I am a little sad to sacrifice some of it to the build this year).

Completion 2%

We’ll give ourselves 2% completion – for having some the materials and for having cleared the trash and debris out of the build site area!

Check back often – we will continue to update this specific blog post as we move along on this project!
